Kent Von Maubeuge – Regulations and recommendations from the new ISO design guide for geosynthetic barriers – August 2019

Recorded in August 2019 this webinar covers the current draft of the ISO design guide “ISO/TR 18228-9:2018(E) “Design using geosynthetics – Part 9: Barriers”.

Webinar Description

Recorded in August 2019 this webinar covers the current draft of the ISO design guide “ISO/TR 18228-9:2018(E) “Design using geosynthetics – Part 9: Barriers”.

Most regulations describe material properties in detail or refer to existing specifications. However, some regulations show a shortage on other relevant design parameters, such as design issues, external effects, durability issues, installation considerations and/or quality control/assurance.

The design guide “ISO/TR 18228-9:2018(E) “Design using geosynthetics – Part 9: Barriers” aims to assist the process by identifying the various characteristics of barrier types and comparing them with the requirements of a variety of different applications. It also offers design advice to professionals involved in the design of civil engineering and construction solutions using geosynthetics materials. Overall, the intent is to encourage appropriate selection of materials and design methods to suit particular applications, rather than to redesign projects to suit predetermined materials. Many aspects of the design process have been considered as well as the particular parameters of various sites and applications.

About the Speaker

Kent von Maubeuge (BSc. MSc. Civil Eng)

For more than 25 years, he has been an active member of  various associations, such as DIN, CEN and ISO. He is also a member of ASTM International and is especially involved as chairman (D35.04) in standards for GCLs. He also serves as Chairman for CEN TC189/WG6 Barriers and the Technical Committee IGS Barrier Systems. He has chaired both ASTM past workshops on GCLs as well as the ASTM symposium on multi-component GCLs in the States. He is also geosynthetic lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and the University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Kent has published and presented many international papers on geosynthetics and has contributed to numerous conferences as chairman throughout the world and is invited to deliver the “2nd Robert Koerner Distinguished Lecture”, during the GeoMEast 2018 in Cairo, Egypt. He is recently awarded the ASTM Award of Merit, the standards body’s highest honor and the ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to standards development, for your 25+ years of contributions to standards development and committee leadership at ASTM International’s Committee D35 on Geosynthetics. Further involvement in the geosynthetic industry includes: Task group leader ISO 221 WG6/PG9 Designing with Barriers, BoA Geosynthetic Institute, IGS Council member and member of the Technical Advisory Committee Geosynthetics (IFAI).
